CS2 Trade Lock, Trade Protection and Trade Hold: What’s the Difference?
Updated · 7 min read
CS2 trade lock, Trade Protection and trade hold explained: two 7-day timers apply to skins, the 15-day hold does not. Updated October 2026.
Players use “trade lock” for three separate Steam systems: a 7-day cooldown on items bought from the Steam Market, Armory or in-game store, 7-day Trade Protection on items received in a trade, and the Steam trade hold of up to 15 days. Only the first two apply to CS2 items, because Valve’s Steam Support FAQ says CS2 items are not subject to trade holds or trade escrow. The expiry date shown on the item in your inventory is the one that counts.
What are the three systems people call a “trade lock”?
They differ in what triggers them, how long they last and whether the trade can be undone. The table summarises them as of October 2026.
| System | Triggered by | Length | Reversible? | Applies to CS2 items? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Purchase cooldown | Buying from the Steam Market, Armory or in-game store | 7 days | No | Yes |
| Trade Protection | Receiving items in a Steam trade | 7 days | Yes, from Trade History | Yes |
| Steam trade hold | Sending items from an account without a Mobile Authenticator active for 7 days | Up to 15 days | Cancelable while held | No |
Many older articles use “trade lock” for all three. Valve switched on Trade Protection on 15 July 2025, alongside Premier Season Three, and items now arrive instantly but stay protected for a week. Since then the word covers two different timers on CS2 items, which is where most of the confusion comes from.
What does the 7-day cooldown on Market, Armory and store purchases block?
It blocks re-trading and re-listing for 7 days. Valve’s patch notes for The Armory update (2 October 2024) made items from the in-game store, Trade Offers and the Steam Community Market subject to a seven-day re-trade and re-market restriction. The notes are mirrored by esports.gg.
The cooldown does not stop you using the item. A Market purchase cannot be reversed; it just cannot be traded, sold to a third party or relisted until the timer ends. Cases and capsules bought on the Market can still be opened. Items received through a trade follow the Trade Protection rules below instead.
Did the expiry time change in 2026?
Yes, for Market purchases. Reports dated 23 June 2026 say Valve changed the trade lock without any patch-note entry. Before that, Market purchases became tradable at the same fixed time each day.
Items now become tradable 168 hours after they enter the inventory. A skin bought at 10:57 AM unlocks at 10:57 AM seven days later. Reporting differs on whether the same timing applies to trades and whether unlock times round to the full hour. Read the timestamp Steam shows on the item rather than counting days yourself.
How does CS2 Trade Protection work?
Trade Protection delivers traded items instantly but keeps them restricted, and the trade reversible, for 7 days. Valve’s announcement said that if you lose control of your account or are scammed, you may reverse all Counter-Strike item trades from the last 7 days.
Protected items carry a small yellow shield. Valve’s FAQ says that for the 7 days they cannot be consumed, modified, or transferred. In practice, cases, souvenir packages and sticker capsules cannot be opened, stickers and charms from trades cannot be applied, and skins cannot be moved to a Storage Unit.
Further rules from Valve’s Trade Protected Items FAQ:
- It is a per-game setting, so all CS2 items are protected for 7 days after being received in a trade.
- Protected and non-protected items cannot be mixed in the same trade.
- Cross-game trades involving CS2 items are off the table.
- Trades completed before the update went live cannot be reversed.
- After 7 days the status expires and the trade can no longer be reversed.
Is the Steam trade hold (up to 15 days) still a thing for CS2?
Steam still uses trade holds, but CS2 items are exempt. CS2 trades complete immediately, whether or not the account has a mobile authenticator. Guides written before July 2025 still describe the old behaviour.
For other games, a trade hold is the period after both parties accept a trade while Steam holds the items before delivering them. The rules in Steam’s Trade and Market Holds FAQ work like this:
- Holds run up to 15 days when the sending account has had no Mobile Authenticator for the last 7 days.
- Trades and Market listings created within 7 days after adding an authenticator are still held for 15 days.
- Between friends of more than one year, the hold is 1 day.
- A hijacker can be stopped by cancelling the transactions that are on hold.
What can you do with a locked item?
A locked item can be equipped and used in game, but not traded or sold. The table compares the two timers on CS2 items.
| Action | Trade Protected item | 7-day purchase cooldown item |
|---|---|---|
| Equip and play | Yes | Yes |
| Trade to another player | No | No |
| List on Steam Market | No | No |
| Open a case or capsule | No | Yes, for cases bought on the Market |
| Storage Unit, stickers, name tags, trade-up contract | No | Not documented by Valve; check the item |
The last row is deliberately cautious. Trade Protection explicitly bars consuming and modifying items, which rules out trade-up contracts, stickers, charms and name tags. The purchase-cooldown wording covers only re-trading and re-marketing. Some guides also list items unboxed from cases as locked for 7 days, which skinfolio’s table does, but Valve’s patch notes do not mention it, so trust the date on the item.
Before planning a contract, check the timer on every input.
How do trade reversals and the 30-day restriction work?
Reversing trades returns the items but locks the reversing account out of trading and the Market for 30 days. The steps, based on Strafe’s walkthrough:
- Log in, open Profile, then Inventory.
- Under the “More” drop-down, open Trade History.
- Click the “Recover the account and items” link.
- Review the highlighted reversible trades and confirm.
No Steam Support contact is needed. Reversing covers all trades containing Trade Protected items from the last 7 days, not a selection. Steam Support cannot modify the 30-day restriction.
The design assumes an account hijack, but it also creates risk for cash deals outside Steam: a seller could reverse a trade after being paid. One marketplace expects platforms to hold sellers’ money in escrow for at least 7 days.
Note: Use the reversal only after a real compromise or scam. The 30-day lockout applies to your account even if you reverse a single trade you regret.
How are account restrictions different from item timers?
Item timers attach to one item; account restrictions attach to your account and follow security events. Steam Support cannot modify trading or Market restrictions, regardless of how the account became restricted. Typical triggers as of October 2026:
| Event | Restriction | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in on a newly authorized device | 7 days | Trading and Market from that device |
| Forgotten-password reset | 5 days (30 if inactive for 2+ months) | Trading and Market |
| Steam Guard newly enabled or re-enabled | 15 days | Trading and Market |
| Mobile Authenticator removed | 15 days | Trading and Market |
| Mobile Authenticator moved to a new phone | 2 days | Trading and Market |
| Trade reversal | 30 days | Trading and Market |
These figures match published rules for a password reset, new device, authenticator removal and authenticator transfer. The new-device block does not apply once the Mobile Authenticator has been active for 7 days. Steam shows the exact reason and expiry when you try to trade, so read that message before assuming an item timer is the cause.
Can a trade lock be removed early?
No. Neither Valve nor Steam Support offers an early unlock, and nobody can skip a hold for you. Treat any “unlock” service that asks for your login, an API key or a trade offer as a scam.
Planning helps instead: enable the Mobile Authenticator well before you need it, keep one phone, and check the expiry before you sell or modify an item.
How do locks affect skins from case openings?
Any skin that reaches your Steam inventory through a trade is Trade Protected for 7 days, so check the date on it after a withdrawal. On CSDROP, items won are credited to the balance at market value. Skins can be bought on the CSDROP marketplace and withdrawn to Steam through SkinsBack.
Case opening on CSDROP is for adults only: 18+, or the age of majority in your country if higher. It uses real money, so it never guarantees a return. Set a budget and stop when it is spent. Each case page shows its item pool and drop rates before you open it; browse them in the CSDROP case library. New accounts get free cases after any required email, Discord or Steam verification, listed on the free case page.
FAQ
Is a CS2 trade lock the same as Trade Protection?
No. “Trade lock” usually means the 7-day cooldown on items bought from the Market, Armory or in-game store. Trade Protection applies to items received in a trade and also makes that trade reversible. Both last 7 days, which is why they get mixed up.
Can I reverse a CS2 trade after 7 days?
No. Once the 7 days expire, the Trade Protected status ends and the trade can no longer be reversed. Trades made before the July 2025 rollout cannot be reversed either.
Do CS2 skins still get a 15-day trade hold without Steam Guard?
Not as a trade hold, because CS2 items are exempt from holds and escrow. Account restrictions can still block trading, for example after a password reset or when Steam Guard is newly enabled. Those are separate from item timers.
Can I open a case I bought on the Steam Market right away?
Yes. The 7-day Market cooldown only blocks trading and re-listing, so the case can be opened. A case received in a trade cannot be opened until its 7-day Trade Protection ends.
Can I equip a Trade Protected skin?
Yes. You can equip it and play with it immediately. For 7 days you cannot trade, sell, store or open it, or change it with stickers, charms or name tags.
What happens if I reverse a trade?
The items return to their previous owners, and your account cannot trade or use the Steam Community Market for 30 days. Steam Support cannot shorten this restriction.
